Are you thinking about starting with Shopify POS in your physical store – and wondering what it will actually cost you? The good news: getting started is often more affordable than many people expect. The key is to keep an eye on all cost factors from the start – not just the monthly fees, but also one-time hardware purchases, transaction costs, and legal requirements such as the TSE in Germany.
Here’s an overview of all the total costs so you can plan your setup realistically – without any unpleasant surprises.
#1 Monthly costs: Shopify POS Lite or Pro?
Shopify POS comes in two versions – and the choice depends less on price and more on what you actually need.
Shopify POS Lite: The basic version is included with every Shopify plan at no extra cost. It’s perfect if you only handle sales occasionally in-store, for example at trade shows or pop-up shops. With Lite, you can accept payments, manage inventory, and view reports.
Shopify POS Pro: The Pro version costs €79 per month per location. It comes with advanced features that are especially useful for growing businesses with permanent stores or multiple locations. These include advanced staff permissions, more detailed reports, omnichannel functions like Click & Collect, and personalized customer profiles.

#2 One-time hardware costs: what you really need
Besides the software, you’ll need suitable POS hardware, which you can order directly from Shopify. The rule here: start small – and expand when needed.
Minimal setup: For a mobile sales stand, a tablet with a mount and a card reader is often enough. The card reader can be purchased from Shopify in a bundle with a tablet mount starting at €179. Additional costs apply for the tablet or iPhone itself.
Advanced setup: If you run a permanent store, you may need a more advanced setup with a receipt printer, cash drawer, and scanner. Shopify offers different complete packages for Apple and Android devices ranging from €839 – €939 (plus the tablet as POS Terminal).
#3 Additional costs and fees
In addition to hardware and subscription fees, there are a few other things to consider in your budget.
Transaction Fees
When using Shopify Payments, transaction fees apply, and these vary depending on your Shopify plan. Shopify POS fees are often cheaper than external payment providers and are billed directly through Shopify, which makes accounting much easier.
TSE Solution (for Germany)
If you sell in physical stores in Germany, a certified technical security device (TSE) is legally required to stay compliant with GoBD. Since Shopify POS does not have a built-in TSE, an external solution must be connected. Our recommendation: use the TSE App from OpenFiskal. Cost: €14.99 per month per register.
If you want an even more convenient option, try the Cash Register Reporting App from OpenFiskal. It also takes care of the legally required reports to the tax authorities. The cost here is €79.99 per year per location, including two reports.
Conclusion: what does Shopify POS really cost?
The total cost of Shopify POS depends a lot on your business model.
Here’s what to factor in:
- Monthly fees: from €0 (POS Lite) or €79 per location (POS Pro)
- One-time hardware costs: approx. €200 – €1,000 (plus tablet)
- Additional costs: for transactions and possibly TSE
